      <image:title>Wild Horse Roundup - Wild Horse Roundup</image:title>
<image:caption>WAR ON WILD HORSES TO KEEP LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY HAPPY. "The Path Forward" is a plan that calls for the near eradication of wild horses and burros from public lands to benefit commercial livestock companies that graze their stock on public lands at taxpayer expense, and want our wild horses removed as competition for forage on federally designated wild horse habitat. National humane groups (HSUS, ASPCA, and Return to Freedom) all conspired with the meat industry and other anti-horse interests to create this plan and supported with Bureau of Land Management's (BLM), false narratives that there is an overpopulation of wild horses, and the "necessity" of roundups due to limited food and water. However, BLM has no problem allowing thousands upon thousands of livestock to graze in the same areas, all while conveniently ignoring the impacts of overgrazing by the commercial livestock industry -- at taxpayer expense. The Bureau of Land Management plans to round up an additional 6000 wild horses in 2021, using the emergency designation (due to drought) to push full steam ahead without fulfilling its National Environmental Policy Act regulations. Again, livestock will still be allowed to graze in these same areas. For the stunning horse in the photos, he is an icon located in Sand Wash Basin, Moffit County, Colorado, where people travel from the world over to see the wild horses. Starting next week, this beautiful horse, and hundreds of others, will be chased by helicopter, and be forever separated from his family, consigned to a life in captivity - and possibly even death in a foreign slaughter plant. If you wish to use your voice to stop this cruel and unnecessary taxpayer funded round up, please contact: US Senator Michael Bennet: www.bennet.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact BLM State Director, Jamie Connell blm_co_statedirector@blm.gov Little Snake Field Office BLM_CO_LSFO_Web@blm.gov Wild Horses belong on our lands and should be left alone, they should not be removed to accommodate the environmentally destructive livestock industry.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Truth Behind Lanolin - The Truth Behind Lanolin</image:title>
<image:caption>Lanolin is used in many different products: soap, cosmetics, skin and hair care, lip balm, pharmaceuticals, and can also be found in some lubricants, used to soften baseball gloves, and is added to clothing to make them water resistant. It is even used in products to prevent metal from rusting. Lanolin can be labeled as Cholesterin, Isopropyl Lanolate, Laneth, Lanogene, Lanolin Acids, Lanolin Alcohol, Lanosterols, Sterols, Triterpene Alcohols, Wool Fat and Wool Wax. Sheep provide nearly all the world’s lanolin—the oily substance produced from the sheep’s sebaceous glands, referred to as “wool wax or wool grease”, it is extracted from sheared wool that is about to be processed into yarn or felt. The wool industry is not a gentle place. Sheep that are bred for their wool are usually slaughtered for their meat, making lanolin a byproduct of the meat industry. In the shearing process, shearers are paid by the volume of animals they shear, so sheep are often handled roughly, with a lot being injured. Extreme cruelty of these gentle animals by shearers has been widely documented: punching, kicking, and stomping on frightened and confused sheep -- and worse. To add to the pain, in Australia, where the majority of the world’s wool is produced, the barbaric procedure Mulesing is practiced. Mulesing is where skin is sliced from the buttocks of lambs, without painkillers, to produce a scar free of wool, fecal/urine stains, and skin wrinkles to keep flies from laying eggs in the folds of their skin. When you look at the wool industry and the suffering sheep endure for lanolin, it just makes sense to avoid the wool by-product and use products with plant-based oils in place of lanolin.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ag-Gag Laws - The Harm of Ag-Gag Laws</image:title>
<image:caption>For many people, the meaning behind “Ag-Gag” is relatively unknown. Ag-Gag Laws are a violation of free speech. Ag-Gag laws have been instituted to criminalize people who speak out about the cruelty and suffering of animals on factory/industrial farms, who bring attention to laws being broken that potentially jeopardize food safety, workers’ rights, and environmental standards. With no federal laws regulating the treatment of animals in factory farms, cruelty has become the norm in the meat, dairy, and egg industries. Ag-Gag laws are designed to keep the shocking abuse that farm animals endure and the illegal activity at industrial farms and slaughterhouses, out of sight and out of mind. Sadly, these laws have taken a step further in some states, like Arkansas and North Carolina, where laws have been passed criminalizing whistleblowers not only for speaking out about the atrocities being committed in agricultural facilities, but other businesses, including hospitals, elderly and veteran care facilities and even schools. In fact, both states allow individuals and companies to sue whistleblowers for damages of up to $5,000, per day, for documenting and recording sounds and/or images while on an employer’s property and using the evidence in a way that is damaging to the employer. The Dangers of Ag-Gag Laws by Animal Legal Defense Fund is informative and brings to light how imperative it is to investigate, document, and publicize corporate agriculture’s abuses – for the well-being of the animals, the workers and consumers health and safety, and the environment, as well as beyond the agricultural world. It is vital that we all educate ourselves on Ag-Gag, watch for such bills being introduced and stand up and say “No” to the states and the factory / industrial farm bullies whose desire is to violate our first amendment rights and silence our freedom of speech in order to hide the cruelty toward animals and the neglect, abuse and exploitation of humans, because at any time, anyone of us may find ourselves in a situation where we see something that needs reported or we need gathered documentation to prove a criminal act was committed against a loved one, without the threat of criminalization.</image:caption>

<image:title>Say Cheese! - SAY CHEESE….. I n the US alone, each person consumes over 38 pounds of cheese, on average, per year. That’s a lot of cheese! Clearly, Americans have a love affair with cheese, making it one of the hardest foods to give up for many people switching to plant-based diets. Thankfully to help with this transition, there are a variety of dairy-free options available that are much more palatable than the first non-dairy tofu-based cheeses introduced in the 1980’s. Today, we have the choice of many different plant-based cheeses made from soy, nuts and seeds such as macadamia, cashews, almonds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and even coconut, that come in a wide selection of flavors that easily rival their dairy counterparts, and styles – including artisan cheeses and cream cheese! Cheddar, Smoked Gouda, Provolone, Colby-Jack, American, Pepper-Jack, Mozzarella, Parmesan – even Feta crumbles are all available and can be used just like you would with dairy. So sprinkle plant-based parmesan on your favorite pasta, add a slice of Gouda or Provolone to a sandwich, make your lasagna – or pizza extra cheesy with mozzarella, dress up tacos and enchiladas with shredded American – or make a gooey, cheesy grilled cheese; and perk up a salad with feta! So many choices just waiting for you to give these delicious cheeses a try! Follow Your Heart, Violife, Miyokos, Field Roast Chao cheese, 365, Parmela Creamery and Tofutti and Follow Your Heart for cream cheese are but a few of the many brands available out there. Click on each and read about these incredible plant-based products, find out if they are available in a store near you and try them. It is important not to go into plant based-cheeses with the expectation that they are going to be identical to dairy cheeses in taste and texture because they aren’t. But they are delicious, and it is essential to shop around and taste test because out of the many available, you will find dairy-free-cheese that is pleasing to your palate. Remember, by purchasing dairy-free cheeses not only are you saving the lives of cows, but you are supporting companies that value sustainability and the environment. Make it stand out.</image:title>

      <image:title>EATS Act - EATS Act</image:title>
<image:caption>The Exposing Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act (H.R. 4999/S. 2619), introduced by members of congress from states that are home to industrial agriculture interests, is nothing less than a direct assault on steps towards a more humane future and the rights of each state and local jurisdictions to pass their own animal protection laws. The “Eats Act” is an enormous threat to animals across the United States. It is designed to destroy state laws that currently protect farm animals, including legislation that prohibits inhumane confinement of egg-laying hens in battery cages, mother pigs in gestation crates, and calves in veal crates. The “Eats Act” would also nullify other protections against extreme cruelties—abuse of dogs in puppy mills, killing of animals for the wildlife trade and painful experiments inflicted on animals for cosmetic testing, to name a few. Because of the bill’s broad definition of “any agricultural product,” the “Eats Act” could void hundreds of state and local laws regarding animal welfare, farm labor, environmental protection, and food safety. The “Eats Act” is severely misguided and should be a concern for every US citizen, as it would not only remove much needed protections from animals, but strip the ability from each individual state and local jurisdiction to pass their own agricultural product laws to protect animals, people and the environment. To be a voice for the animals and the rights of your state, click on the link below and take action to let your federal lawmakers know you oppose this dangerous bill.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Goats are members of the Bovidae family which includes cattle, sheep, antelope, and buffalo. Goats were one of the first animals to be domesticated over 10,000 years ago in the Near East (the lands around the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea), and being among the first animals brought to North America, goats have been here for hundreds of years. There are approximately 1 billion goats around the world and over 200 breeds of domestic goats, with their sizes varying greatly according to breed. Nigerian dwarf goats are one of the smallest breeds, weighing around 20 pounds, while Nubian goats weigh can up to 250 lbs. and Boer goats can weigh up to 300 lbs.</image:caption>

<image:title>All About Goats - A male goat is called a buck or a billy. If it is castrated, and then it is called a wether. Female goats are called nannies or does, while baby goats are called kids. You have got to be “kidding”! Nope – when a doe gives birth it is called “kidding”. Females are pregnant for 5 months, then usually give birth to twins. Some do have a single kid, while others can have triplets or even quintuplets! Most newborns are up and walking around within minutes of being born. “Maaa”. Mothers and kids begin vocal exchanges within minutes of kids being born. Goats call or vocalize by bleating, with each goat's voice being unique, making it recognizable by others, which is very important so mothers and kids can easily find each other.</image:title>

<image:title>All About Goats - Goats are herbivores, which means they eat only plants. Their favorite food is grass. They are selective in what they eat, choosing clean dry food over dirty, wet food. Goats do not have upper teeth, but they have a tough upper pad in their mouth that helps with chewing. Their lips are sensitive and agile, allowing them to nibble on fresh, tender grasses. Goats are ruminants, hoofed herbivorous grazing animals, most having a four-chambered stomach, to maximize absorption and digestion of nutrients. The first three stomachs are for fermentation, while the last one produces acid for digestion. Ruminating mammals include cattle, sheep, giraffes, deer, gazelles and antelopes. (Camels and Chevrotains have a three-chambered stomach and are referred to as pseudo ruminants.) Goats, like sheep, have rectangular pupils that allow them to see about 340 degrees (almost all the way) around them, providing a panoramic vision which can detect intruders approaching from various directions</image:title>

<image:title>All About Goats - Goat horns are narrow and straight. Most goats have horns, however there are goats that are naturally born without horns. This is called “polled”. Goat tails are naturally short and point up (unless they are sick or frightened). Goats have 60 chromosomes (humans have 46). Goats are independent and naturally curious. They jump, climb, leap, and explore – it is all one big adventure. Goats are known for their agility and ability to climb up and on just about anything. They are the only ruminant that climbs trees. Goats have unique personalities and share special bonds with each other and with other animals and can get sad and depressed when they aren’t with their friends.</image:title>

<image:caption>Turkeys are from the family of Phasianidae, which include pheasants, partridges, francolins, junglefowl and grouse. Turkeys are native to the Americas. It is reported that turkeys were first domesticated in Central America around 800 B.C. for meat, and indigenous North Americans began using turkey feathers in robes and blankets around 200 B.C. Turkeys got their name from the first Europeans who saw them as they thought the birds were relatives to the guinea fowl which were imported into Europe from Turkey and known as “turkey fowl”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Let's Talk Turkey - There are two primary species of turkeys. There is the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), which is the same species as the domesticated turkey in the United States. Wild turkeys can be found in every state except Alaska. The second is known as the Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris ocellata), an endangered bird that is native to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The two species had originally been classified separately, but because they are so similar, they were placed into the same genus. n the US, the estimated number of turkeys raised on farms in 2021 was 214 million. According to the National Wild Turkey Foundation, there are roughly 6.2 million turkeys in the wild in the US, and for the Ocellated Turkeys, due to the difficulty in obtaining reliable data, it is estimated that 20,000 to 50,000 currently living in the wild. A male turkey is called a "tom" or "gobbler”; a female turkey is called a "jenny" or "hen"; and a baby turkey is called a "chick" or "poult". A group of turkeys is called a "rafter" or "flock". Every turkey has a unique voice, and they communicate using nearly 30 distinct vocalizations. Male turkeys are the only ones that “gobble" and can be heard a mile away! The color of a turkey's head changes color and reflects their mood, especially with males. The fleshy growth covering a male's beak is called a "snood”, while the flap of skin hanging from a turkey's chin is called a "wattle".</image:title>

<image:title>Let's Talk Turkey - Turkeys are omnivores. Wild turkeys eat mostly eat seeds, grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and insects, but will eat fish, snails, and lizards. Domestic turkeys, enjoy the same food as wild turkeys, however domestic farm-raised turkeys are usually fed commercial-grade feed for weight and size. If allowed to roam and forage, captive turkeys will eat insects and seeds. Wild turkeys are agile birds that can run up to 25 miles per hour and fly short distances up to 55 miles per hour. Sadly, most domestic birds are bred to grow very large for food, making it impossible for them to run or fly. Turkeys have incredible vision and see in color. It is thought that turkeys see about 3 times better than humans! A turkey’s eyes are on the sides of their heads, giving them peripheral vision. They can see 270-degree field of view, which is great for spotting predators. They just don’t see well at night. Male turkeys have a "beard”, which is a clump of fine, fibrous feathers that grow from their chest, and looks more like a horse's tail than feathers.</image:title>

<image:title>Let's Talk Turkey - A female turkey can lay 100 eggs in a year. Male turkeys are larger than females, and when it comes to feathers, wild male turkeys have more vibrant colors. Wild turkeys have 5000 – 60000 feathers, with male turkeys having 18 tail feathers that make up their impressive fan, which they will open and spread-out during mating season. Domestic turkeys are normally white in color, which is intentional part of domestication because white pin feathers are less noticeable on the carcass of birds for human consumption. Turkeys are highly intelligent, affectionate, sensitive, and social animals. They form strong lifelong friendships and show affection towards other turkeys in their flock, as well as with humans. Turkeys docile and loving and like to play. They enjoy having their feathers stroked and like listening to music, which they will often sing along (loudly) to.</image:title>

<image:title>All About Chickens - Chickens are native to the tropical jungles of Southeast Asia but have been domesticated in the last (approximately) 8,000 years and are found on every continent but Antarctica. Chickens belong to the family Phasianidae, which includes pheasants, partridges, junglefowl, turkeys, Old World quail, and peafowl. An adult male chicken is called a “rooster” and an adult female is called a “hen.” Roosters are larger, usually more brightly colored, and have larger combs on top of their heads compared to hens. Chickens are opportunistic feeders and forage for food by scratching their beaks on the ground, searching for insects, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. In captivity, chickens are primarily fed chicken feed that consists mostly of grains and grain byproducts. Did you know that chickens have four basic types of feathers? Contour (outer protection), plumules (fluffy down), filoplumes (sensory receptors at their base) and bristles (facial protection). Chickens can fly but because they are heavy, they can only go about 200 ft. The tip of a chicken’s beak is composed of clusters of highly sensitive receptors which allow them to differentiate between all textures, objects and substances.</image:title>

<image:title>All About Chickens - Chickens are diurnal, meaning they can’t see in the dark. However, they can sense whether it is light or dark out through the pineal gland, which sits above their midbrain, behind their eyes. Chickens see more colors than humans! The human retina contains cones that are only sensitive to wavelengths of red, blue and green, while chickens have an additional cone that can detect violet and some ultraviolet wavelengths. And, in addition to seeing more colors than humans, chickens have the ability to focus close up and far away at the same time, in different areas of their field of vision. It’s not just “clucking” – chickens have a language that consists of at least 24 different vocalizations.</image:title>

<image:title>All About Chickens - Mother hens are called “broody hens” when they are sitting on their nests. (A hen can lay more than 300 eggs per year!) She will turn her eggs about 50 times per day, using her body, feet and beak to carefully move each egg so it maintains the correct temperature, moisture, ventilation and humidity during the incubation period. While sitting on her eggs, the mother hen will coo and murmur to the unhatched chicks, building a bond by talking to them while they are still in the shell. The chicks often peep back to her just before they are ready to hatch. Baby chicks can eat and walk without help soon after hatching but they still need mom to help keep them warm.</image:title>

When allowed, they spend their days foraging in the grass for insects and seeds, taking dust baths, and building nests and raising their young. Sadly, the majority of chickens don’t get to live such a happy and natural and happy life. There are approximately 25.9 billion chickens in the world, with 518.3 million in the United States. A large majority are hens used for egg-laying and broiler meat production. Sadly, around 2,000 meat chickens are slaughtered every second around the world.</image:title>

There were over 700 million pigs worldwide, in 2021, with approximately 74.77 million pigs and hogs in the United States. A male pig that is intact is called a boar, while a neutered male is called a Barrow. Female pigs that have not had piglets are called Gilts; and Sows if they have farrowed one litter. Baby pigs are called piglets.</image:caption>

<image:title>All About Pigs - A sow can give birth to a litter of 7 to 12 piglets, about twice a year. The gestation period of a sow is 115 days (3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days). Mother pigs sing to their babies while nursing, and newborn piglets learn their voices. Pigs communicate constantly with one another. There have been more than 20 types of oinks, grunts, and squeals identified, which they use for different situations.</image:title>

<image:title>All About Pigs - Pigs have a great sense of smell with a sensitive, but powerful, snout that can help them smell something 25 feet underground! Pigs are highly intelligent and learn quickly. Pigs rank #4 in animal intelligence behind chimpanzees, dolphins and elephants. Pigs are very clean animals. They go to the bathroom far from their living or eating area – even piglets that are only a few hours old will leave the nest to relieve themselves. Pigs do not have sweat glands, so they are unable to sweat. They cool their skin by rolling in mud, which also protects their skin from the sun.</image:title>

<image:caption>Did you know that sheep extremely intelligent and excellent at recognizing and distinguishing between faces? In one study, scientists had sheep distinguish between the faces of celebrities such as Barack Obama, Emma Watson, and Jake Gyllenhaal! Many were able to still recognize the face after the picture had been altered or they were shown a different angle. They are wooly geniuses!</image:caption>

<image:title>All About Sheep - Sheep have a great sense of smell, and have special scent glands located in front of their eyes and between the digits of their hooves to help them out! Mothers learn to identify their babies by their unique scent. Our Jacob Sheep were at one time taken from their mothers. We reunited them and guess what? They all found their moms in a matter of seconds. The moms knew too! Sheep have a great sense of smell, and have special scent glands located in front of their eyes and between the digits of their hooves to help them out! Mothers learn to identify their babies by their unique scent. Sheep also have a great sense of taste, and can even use this sense to discriminate between plants and substances for the purpose of self-medication! This is an example of a behavior called Zoopharmacognosy, where non-human animals seek out plants, insects, certain types of soil and other things to medicate themselves for ailments like stomach upset and high parasite loads! Sheep have amazing peripheral vision. Their field of vision is nearly 360 degrees! They cannot see directly behind them, but otherwise have a very impressive visual range, especially when their head is lowered to graze! Sheep have a nifty little split in their upper lip to help them choose the plants they consume! You know what they don’t have though? Front teeth in their upper jaw! Sheep memories are also pretty great. They can recognize up to 50 sheep faces and remember them for two years! Turn that frown upside down! Sheep can distinguish between a smile and a frown on human faces, and prefer smiles much like us. Sheep are quite clever! They can navigate mazes and have been found to use their excellent memory to memorize how to get through them quickly!</image:title>

<image:title>All About Sheep - Sheep are herbivores and eat mainly plant material. In the wild or when living in pastures, sheep spend a good part of their day grazing on grass and weeds. Sheep that live in an enclosure with no grass to graze are often fed hay or silage. Silage includes foods such as fermented hay or corn. Sheep are found all over the world, living in habitats that range from forests to desert conditions. Occasionally, people raise sheep to be wooly pets; sadly however, their agricultural role as livestock includes harvesting for milk, cheese, meat, and wool. Sheep are diurnal graminavores. In other words, sheep are herbivorous animals that primarily consume grass and share a particular digestive system with over 150 different animals. Within the abdominal cavity of their four-chambered stomach, sheep have a rumen. A rumen is a holding place for food that the sheep will later regurgitate and re-swallow. Sheep will demonstrate a flocking behavior- once separated from the group, sheep will experience stress as anxiety takes over.</image:title>

<image:title>All About Sheep - Not only do sheep form friendships, it appears they have some capacity for forming mental images of the faces of other individuals. We don’t know to what extent they experience this but, for humans, it would be similar to thinking about a good friend you are missing and picturing their face.' Sheep can see violet, blue, cyan, green, yellow, and orange. While they technically have the ability to see a little bit of red, they are red-green colorblind, so can’t distinguish between those colors.</image:title>

<image:title>The Animals of the Berkshire Farm Sanctuary - Milady - Meet Milady of Yorkshire</image:title>
<image:caption>This big girl was rescued on 3/14/22 before heading to slaughter. Milady is a Yorkshire pig who lived in a small, muddy and deplorable makeshift pen. She could barely turn around and often went without basic needs. Now she is living the good life and learning about rolling in the grass, nosing for bugs, and getting full belly rubs. It costs a lot to feed a large pig! Your donations support all her needs!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Patch and his brother Corky knew one life -- the private breeding operation where they were two piglets among possibly hundreds, their mother had given birth to. They lived alongside many other pigs, all surviving on what was provided to them. The pigs were viewed as possessions, same as lawn furniture. But unlike lawn furniture, they needed attention and care, all of which was lacking greatly. Some days there was food, many days there was not. Water was dirty and shelter was nonexistent. In their short lives, Patch and Corky have been hungry, filthy and exposed to all kinds of inclement weather. But it didn't matter, their destiny was determined before they were born. We are so happy that we were able to rescue them from a horrific life. As you can see, Patch’s favorite pastime is mealtime! It is amazing how happy they are to have a feeding schedule that is ALWAYS on time! For Patch and Corky…It’s a Wonderful Life!</image:caption>

<image:caption>These two Jacob sheep were rescued from slaughter, along with Tulip, and Ivy. This inseparable mother and lamb pair would have a much different life had we not saved them -- they wouldn't have had one at all. These sweet, gentle sheep were headed to slaughter. Thankfully we were able to convince the owner to give them to us, so now with their bond stronger than ever, they will enjoy every day of their lives. Petal will experience all the joys of being a lamb: leaping, head-butting, running around and playing with the other lambs, and Rose will spend each day side by side with her baby, grazing, walking, sleeping and just being together, as it should be. <image:caption>Or should we say Sir Pig Newton? This quiet guy is living the life of a noble these days, so we think “Sir” is appropriate. But it wasn’t always so for this pig of pigs. He was abandoned and living on the streets, where survival is tough but even more so for a pig trying to find food and shelter and just stay alive in the dangerous world he suddenly found himself in. Thankfully he was rescued and sent to us, neutered and met his best friend, Frannie, who he adores. Today, this super intelligent, quiet guy lives the good life surrounded by peace and harmony. <image:title>The Animals of the Berkshire Farm Sanctuary - Beanie - Meet Beanie!</image:title>
<image:caption>Beanie was just a tiny baby when we saved him and his brother, Cecil, from becoming the main course at Easter dinner. Bred specifically for meat, and taken away from their mother way too early, these “kids” needed to be bottle fed every three hours - a job our founder, Dori, took great pleasure in and gave them the care, attention and love, these two sweet motherless boys needed. Beanie is quiet and shy, until he gets to know you. He loves slowly cruising through his yard, following Cecil and snuggling with Dori whenever he gets the chance. Beanie is just a sweet, loving, little personality, that we can’t believe his destination was the dinner table. Can you? Beanie would appreciate your donation – or sponsorship, to help the sanctuary with the cost of his care. Your support will say you are happy he is alive.</image:caption>
